Welcome!

This is the website for the Multimodal Multilingual Language Processing Lab [M2L2 Lab] at the University of Birmingham, headed by Dr. Robin Thompson.

At the M2L2 Lab we believe that many sources of information—both linguistic and non-linguistic—are involved in language processing and language acquisition. At the M2L2 Lab, we investigate how these different sources of information are integrated and processed during language communication.

Some of the questions we ask are:

  • Are there differences in how we use and learn a spoken versus a signed language?
  • How does non-language input such as gesture and eye gaze influence language learning and understanding?
  • What does it mean to be a bilingual? Either knowing two spoken languages or a signed and spoken language?
  • How does language interact with perception and action systems?
